Karen Kerr

Karen is an accomplished professional with over 28 years of experience in higher education, focusing on admissions and recruitment. As an administrator and educational consultant, her goal has always revolved around finding the best fit school for student musicians.
Karen most recently served as Director of Admission and Recruitment at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. During her 17 years at the Frost School, she was responsible for the recruitment, auditions/interviews, and admissions of all undergraduate and graduate applicants. While at the Frost School, she served on the Executive Committee, an advisory committee to the Dean, as well as the University of Miami School and College Liaison Committee, and the Undergraduate Scholarship Committee.

Karen successfully streamlined the admissions process at Frost and was instrumental in the significant increase of the academic profile for admitted undergraduate students and the over 100% increase in graduate program applications. She managed and ran admissions decision committees and worked closely with faculty to ensure their feedback was part of the admissions decision.
Prior to joining the Frost School, she served on the admissions staff at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. As an admissions counselor at Michigan, Karen reviewed applications at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Additionally, she oversaw the summer orientation sessions and worked to guide applicants throughout the application and audition process.


Karen started her career as part of the admissions staff at Indiana University Southeast. These six years were the building blocks for her long career in admissions. The experience she gained in general admissions provided her with the knowledge needed to grow her career.
Karen is an associate member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA). During her career in admissions, she was a member of several organizations for admissions professionals including, ICCAM, the Independent Consortium on College Admissions in Music, and the National Music Roundtable.
Karen is originally from the Midwest and earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from Indiana University Southeast where her principal instrument was piano. She also holds a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from the University of Miami and a certificate in College Counseling from the University of California San Diego.
